Before and After

How Laser Treatments Work

What can be treated with aesthetic lasers?

Lasers can be used to treat unwanted hair, pigment, broken blood vessels, leg veins and tattoos. The skin can also be revitalized with lasers and the appearance improved by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing surgical and acne scars, and reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

Many of these skin conditions can also be treated with IPL (intense pulsed light).

How can lasers be used for skin revitalization?

Lasers can renew the skin by enhancing collagen and elastin production resulting in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles providing a smooth and youthful looking appearance. Lasers can also lighten pigmentation caused by sun damage on the face, neck, hands, arms and legs. For many people, these brown spots are one of the first signs of aging.

What is IPL?

Unlike lasers that generally work with a single wavelength of light, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses many wavelengths of specifically filtered light. Both lasers and IPL devices are designed to treat specific unwanted targets in the skin like pigment from sun damage, broken blood vessels or hair.

What are the benefits of IPL?

IPL can provide laser-like results on a variety of unwanted conditions. Treatment sessions are fast and easy, and no downtime is required for recovery. Depending on the level of treatment, you can have an IPL or laser treatment session on your lunch break and return immediately to work or your daily activities.

What is fractional laser treatment?

Fractional lasers apply light energy in tiny micro-beams to create micro-columns of treatment on the skin, which can be controlled with the size, energy, depth and space between each micro-column. By treating only a portion of the skin, healing and recovery is faster with fewer risks.

What is the difference between a non-ablative and an ablative laser?

Unlike ablative lasers, which remove the top layer of skin and part of the sub-layer, non-ablative lasers keep the outer layer of skin in place, for even faster healing and recovery.

Some physicians even use a combination of ablative and non-ablative fractional lasers to take advantage of the best of both technologies.  This approach can provide dramatic yet natural looking results by improving fine lines and wrinkles and treating unwanted pigmentation with as little as 3 days of recovery.

What is Fitzpatrick Skin Typing?

The Fitzpatrick Skin Typing is a visual examination and interview by your provider that is used to assess the melanin content of your skin. This information helps to determine the most effective treatment strategy using laser and IPL devices for treating a variety of skin conditions.

What is a melanin reader and how can it improve my treatment outcomes?

The Skintel® Melanin Reader™ provides an additional element of treatment confidence by determining the average melanin density of skin, in a quantitative manner, prior to laser or IPL based aesthetic treatments – such as hair removal or skin revitalization. Understanding how much melanin is in the skin helps the aesthetic professional better choose the treatment settings on the laser or IPL device for enhanced treatment outcomes, while minimizing the risk of over treatment.

What to Expect

Before your procedure

Your first step to a successful treatment outcome is a pretreatment consultation. A consultation will provide you with the information you need to make the treatment choices for your needs. It also provides your clinician with the information needed to determine the best course of laser treatment for your desired outcomes.

During your consultation, be prepared to provide information about your medical history and your goals for a procedure. This is also a good time to get answers to your treatment questions and to discuss treatment costs.

Treatment costs can vary widely and are based upon:

  • Medical history

  • Degree of the condition to be treated

  • Laser treatment type

  • Size of treatment area

  • Number of treatments needed

During your procedure

Before your treatment, your provider may measure the melanin in your skin to adjust laser power to your specific needs. This can be done by a visual exam using the Fitzpatrick Skin Type evaluation or by using a hand-held melanin reading device called the Skintel®. Assessing the condition of your skin is essential to avoid over-treatment or under-treatment and helps ensure the best aesthetic outcomes.

Your provider will work with you to help ensure your comfort and safety throughout the procedure. You may be given a topical anesthetic to help manage your comfort. During treatment, your clinician will move a handpiece over your skin, which will pulse as it emits the laser light. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed. Depending on the treatment you receive this sensation may produce mild discomfort or none at all.

After your procedure

Post-treatment recovery varies depending on your type of laser treatment and your medical history. Your clinician will provide you with specific follow-up care instructions. Below are some general guidelines for what you can expect as you heal.

Non-ablative and IPL treatments

After your treatment, you can expect to resume your normal daily activities. You will notice redness at the treatment site, which should resolve in a day or two. You can manage any discomfort you have with wrapped ice packs or gel packs (do not apply ice directly to skin). Your doctor may also recommend an oral, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen) or analgesic (acetaminophen) to reduce discomfort. Use the medicine according to your doctor's recommendations.

You may bathe and shower as usual, but keep in mind that the treated area may be temperature sensitive. Until redness has resolved, avoid the following:

  • Sun exposure and tanning on the treated area. Apply an SPF 45 or greater sunscreen to prevent injury to the treatment area and to prevent changes in pigmentation.

  • Swimming, especially in pools with chemicals such as chlorine.

  • Hot tubs, Jacuzzis, and saunas.

  • Activities that cause excess perspiration or any activity that may raise your core body temperature.

  • Aggressive scrubbing and use of exfoliates on the treated area.

Non-ablative and IPL treatments

Pigmented lesions

You may notice that the treated pigmented lesion looks raised and/or darker with a reddened perimeter. This is normal and the lesion will gradually turn darker over the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours after treatment. It may turn dark brown or even black. The lesion will progress to darkening and/or crusting and will start flaking off in an average of seven to twenty-one days. The lesion will usually heal in twenty-one to thirty days. It will continue to fade over the next six to eight weeks. Do not to pick, remove, or pull at any darkened lesions, as scarring may occur.

Vascular lesions

Ablative laser treatments

Non-ablative and IPL treatments

Pigmented lesions

Vascular lesions

The vessels may undergo immediate graying or blanching, or they may exhibit a slight purple or red color change. The vessels will fully or partially fade in about ten to fourteen days. Schedule a follow-up appointment for evaluation. Repeat treatments may be performed every seven to fourteen days if skin has fully recovered. One to four treatments may be necessary seven to fourteen days apart. Do not pick, remove, or pull at any darkened lesions, as scarring may occur.

  • Pico Genesis

AM I A CANDIDATE?

Because PICO Genesis™ is effective on all skin types, virtually everyone can benefit from the procedure.

Reasons you may seek treatment include:
  • Sun/Age Spots

  • Pigmentary Concerns

  • Brighter/Radiant Complexion

  • Even Skin Tone

  • Return Skin To Its Youthful State

Is It Safe? Why?

Yes! With significantly shorter and faster laser pulses, PICO Genesis™ revitalizes skin without causing thermal damage to surrounding tissue—an adverse side effect commonly experienced with other conventional laser procedures.

What Skin Types Work With Pico Genesis?

PICO Genesis™ is effective on virtually all skin types and tones.

What is PICO Genesis?

The PICO Genesis is the newest, and most advanced, FDA approved laser technology currently available in the United States. It provides amazing rejuvenation results, correcting a wide array of skin flaws and providing an overall enhanced appearance. The PICO Genesis is a non-surgical, non-invasive and non-ablative laser toning treatment. It offers a gentle and relaxing laser treatment that is able to fight acne, diminish pigmented lesions, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and shrink enlarged pores. The PICO Genesis provides successful results on the face, chest, hands legs and other parts of the body.

What does treatment entail?

Since the PICO Genesis does not resurface the skin, this laser treatment does not require the use of a topical anesthetic creams or gels. Treatment is pain-free. The procedure takes only 20 to 30 minutes to complete and does not involve any downtime.

Can the PICO Genesis be used on all skin types?

Yes. This is one of many of the advantages of the PICO Genesis. Unlike some other laser procedures, it is completely safe and effective for all skin types, including darker skin.

How does the PICO Genesis work?

Powered by the Cutera’s Enlighten Laser, this leading-edge technology delivers high-level laser energy in an incredibly brief amount of time (about a billionth to a trillionth of a second), to selectively target and shatter unwanted pigment lesions, such as solar lentigines and melasma Simultaneously, it also gently heats the dermis (the layer below the skin’s surface) to stimulate collagen and elastin production and fill in lines and wrinkles. The overall result is a dramatically brighter, healthier and more uniform skin tone. It offers benefits without risk of post-treatment complications, such as scarring, discoloration, bruising or inflammation that can sometimes occur with other types of laser toning treatments.

What Can I Expect From Tattoo Removal After One Session?

Tattoo removal is a process. You should experience some significant fading, but don’t expect a complete tattoo removal after one session. We usually recommend between 1-3 treatments for lightening and 3-6 treatments for complete removal with the Enlighten Cutera laser.

What Exactly Is Picosecond Laser Tattoo Removal?

PicoSecond laser tattoo removal is simply laser tattoo removal treatment that is completed using a PicoSecond laser. These lasers provide a faster and less damaging tattoo removal experience because they operate at a faster speed than traditional Q-Switch lasers. (Picoseconds – one trillionth of a second, vs nanoseconds – one billionth of a second). This allows them to remove tattoos more quickly and completely than older-style Q-Switch lasers, and do a better job of fading and removing green and blue inks.

Can You Get A Tattoo After Laser Removal?

Yes! Once treated, the previously tattooed skin will need some time to completely heal and for internal inflammation to settle. We recommend waiting around 6 weeks after your last tattoo removal session before getting a new tattoo in the same area.

Is Blue Ink Tattoo Removal More Difficult Than Others?

Although commonly regarded as the most difficult colored inks to remove, we’ve found that green and blue ink tattoo removal is effective and fast when treated with our PicoSure laser.

What Can I Expect From My Skin After Laser Tattoo Removal?

While the chance of scarring after treatment is unlikely, there are some temporary side effects that you may expect from your skin after laser tattoo removal. After treatment, most patients notice that their skin turns white and puffy in the treated area. This is a sign of healing and will most likely subside in a few hours. Following that, patients may also experience:

Redness

Tenderness

Swelling

Blistering

Scabs

Bruising

Hyperpigmentation

Hypopigmentation

These side effects are all temporary, however, and should subside completely in a few weeks. After that, your skin should return to it’s normal texture, with a reduced appearance of the unwanted tattoo.

How Long Does Tattoo Removal Take?

The laser tattoo removal treatment itself can be anywhere from 2-30 minutes depending on the size and density of the tattoo. For example, a small, black ink tattoo might take just a few minutes while a large tattoo with lots of lines and colors might take around half an hour. If you have a very large tattoo, treatments might be spread out over a period of days in order to minimize your time under the laser.

How Many Tattoo Removal Treatments Will It Take To Remove My Tattoo Completely?

Removing a tattoo is a process that takes commitment, time, and patience. The number of treatments will vary depending on the color, density, and age of the tattoo as well as your skin type. Some tattoos may clear faster than others, while those that have lots of color might take a bit longer. Although most tattoos can be removed entirely, in some cases total clearance may not be possible. If this happens, usually only faint ghost lines will remain. With the Enlighten Cutera laser, you can expect anywhere from 1-3 treatments for lightening and 3-6 treatments for complete removal. If you are still curious to know how many tattoo removal treatments it will take to completely remove your tattoo, we recommend calling us for a free consultation.

Does Tattoo Removal Leave A Scar?

The chance of scarring is unlikely but possible. The Untattoo Parlor uses a PicoSure laser which condenses and directly targets energy only to the ink pigment leaving the surrounding skin untouched and unharmed. Scarring is often the result of older Q-Switched lasers and/or untrained technicians using excessive heat and energy. If scarring begins to occur during your treatment process we will suspend any further treatments until we have consulted with you and worked out a treatment plan.

How Long Until I Can Exercise After Tattoo Removal?

Right away. You can resume all your regular activities (except sunbathing) immediately after treatment. It is important to be mindful to wear comfortable clothing that will not rub against or otherwise irritate the treatment area.
